Behind the Scent: Alien by Thierry Mugler

Behind the Scent: Alien by Thierry Mugler

“As a child, I had a very hard time living in the world that is imposed on us. I dreamed of creating another world, to my scale—one that was my own…”

– Thierry Mugler

Thierry Mugler has pushed boundaries and created polarizing trends since the beginning of his fashion career and his fragrance Alien is no exception. Released in 2005, Mugler’s second major fragrance (after Angel) has been another added success to his long list of accomplishments.

Thierry Mugler: The Beginning

Mugler’s premiere fashion line, Café de Paris, was only the start for the young french designer. Described as a mix of urban and sophisticated styles, playing with structure and angles in fashion, this line led to Mugler’s recognition as Designer of the Year in 1974 which would pioneer the rest of his career.

Mugler broke into the world of fragrances with his gourmand fragrance, Angel, in 1992. Credited as the first modern gourmand scent, it features notes of praline and chocolate, mixed with a strong accord of patchouli.

The success of the women’s fragrance would lead to a 1996 men's version of Angel. Angel Men or A*Men has notes of caramel, coffee, vanilla, patchouli and honey.

The Road to Alien

In the early 2000’s, Mugler started to explore opportunities to create more eccentric costumes for stage performances. In 2002, Mugler created all of the characters and costumes for Zumanity; a resident cabaret-style show by Cirque du Soleil.

After experimenting with his fashion, Mugler apparently ‘fell off the face of the earth’ and returned as a new version of himself. In his first interview in 8 years,  Mugler explained to the New York Times that this come back was intentional; he didn’t want to be recognized as Thierry Mugler.

If this transformation was Mugler’s childhood dream of creating another world, then Alien is a reflection of just that. He chose the name Alien because of his belief that inside every woman is something so unique, so special, it is Alien to everything else around her.

This wood/earthy fragrance with notes of amber, vanilla and orange blossom is held in a gemstone – like bottle reminiscent of amethyst. Amethyst is said to encourage spiritual elevation and in some ancient cultures, is even believed to have healing powers. Mugler wanted this fragrance to ‘soothe, transport and radiate’, encouraging women to bring their own dream world to reality.
